Flint mother grieves 16-year-old son killed in shooting
Apr 20, 2018The dribbling of the basketball against the pavement along Avenue A came from her son DrayQuan Jones."Ever since he was big enough to dribble a ball, he would be outside," she said Friday, April 13 outside the family's former home on the city's north side. "When he was two or three years old, we'd have to make him come inside the house in the summertime. He would dribble this ball all day, all night."Jones, 16, was shot and killed March 30 on Dort Highway near Hemphill Road.A 15-year-old Flint boy has been charged with single counts of open murder, assault with intent to murder, carrying a concealed weapon and two counts of felony firearm.16-year-old killed in exchange of gunfire across Burton, Flint borderAround 50 people showed up for a vigil Friday night, just hours after a visitation at Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home in Flint.The vigil took place less than 24 hours before Drayquan's funeral on Saturday afternoon.Arron Tenis, 16, was one of the people there to pay his respects. He'd met Drayquan through one of the slain teen's family members and looked at him like a brother."It was hard. I was lost. I didn't know what to do," he said of hearing the news of Drayquan's death. "I was just with him, about five minutes (earlier). We left and got the call he was shot."McCord had left a fashion show where her son was in attendance, having left a few minutes before getting the call that he'd been shot."I was just hysterical," she commented before candles were lit and balloons released at the vigil. "We flew back to the scene and by that time they'd taken him to the hospital."He'd been shot once in the chest and was later pronounced dead at Hurley Medical Center."That was my baby and to lose him like that is just so devastating because I never thought I would be burying my baby at 16 years old," McCord said.
